Das Hertz

Das Hertz is an improvisational group which explores a territory somewhere between jazz-rock fusion, psychedelia and what the Anglo-Americans nowadays call kraut-rock. From the beginning they keep recording almost every note they play together which is the basis for a series of cd-r/web albums which was launched in spring 2006 and has now reached to volume two with "Electric Gentry".

The group started as an offshoot from a project named D.Saster, a free-form subsidiary of a long living band called The Absurd (not to be mistaken for the right-wing East German group with a similar name). The members' musical backgrounds are highly varied. There is jazzman Martin Ziegler (fender rhodes & synthesizer), loop experimentator and frippertronics adept Michael Peters (midified guitar & electronics), mercurial drummer Wolli Dieckmann who has passed through countless bands and styles and last not least former sampling specialist GeeNerve aka Guido Erfen who just switched to bass guitar not too long ago.

The group's name is a pun. While being the grammatically adequate expression for the unit of frequency, the German term "Das Hertz" phonetically sounds like "the heart" (in German: "das Herz"). The heart has a beat and Das Hertz generates rhythm, along with loads of other frequencies from old-fashioned oscillators and all the usual stuff.

In certain cases "the heart" could also mean "the centre" or "the core". "Core" could be understood as a basic idea of the group itself reflected in their way of doing things: reducing the number of musicians in order to achieve transparency in sound, avoiding lengthy fun sessions in order to keep the music in a constant process, recording directly to stereo in order to save time for playing and not to bother with multiple mix-down choices later, editing the results drastically in order to distill the essence of ideas and -due a constant lack of time- forcing the group to concentrate upon results at scarce recording dates.

Well, this all might seem like the musicians are somewhat deeply
into conceptional ideas. In fact they aren't. All they have been striving
for till now is getting some decent performances onto stage. Rehearsal
recordings luckily happened to be enjoyable. Compiled recordings
happened to become web-albums. And that's what it's all about: They
just make it happen! Das Hertz is live!

Das Hertz bearbeitet als improvisierende Formation ein Feld, dass irgendwo zwischen Psychedelia, Fusion und Elektronik alter deutscher Schule angelegt ist. Von Beginn an wird beinahe jede gespielte Note der Band mitgeschnitten. Die dabei entstehenden Aufnahmen bilden das Grundmaterial für eine Serie von CD-R/Web-Alben. Mittlerweile liegt mit dem Doppelalbum "Elekrischer Landadel" Folge 2 der Serie vor.

Die Band hat im Rahmen von D.Saster, einem Free-Form-Ableger der alteingesessenen Kölner Formation The Absurd (West), zusammengefunden. Die Mitspieler kommen aus unterschiedlichen musikalischen Ecken. Martin Ziegler (Fender-Rhodes und Synthesizer) ist Jazzer. Michael Peters (midifizierte E-Gitarre) ist seit Jahrzehnten als Loop-Experimentator und Frippertronics-Adept solo und mit verschiedenen Mitstreitern unterwegs. Drummer Wolli Dieckmann hat zahllose Formationen verschiedenster Stilarten hinter sich gebracht und ist gegenwärtig des öfteren mit dem Literatur-Jazz-Projekt Melange auf der Bühne zu erleben. Guido Erfen war unter den Pseudonymen Schäng Pfui und GeeNerve eher als Sampling-Spezialist bekannt, bevor er vor einigen Jahren zum Bass wechselte.

Der Name der Band in all seiner Vieldeutigkeit ist Programm: Pulsierende Rhythmen zu schwirrenden Oszillationen, eine gewisse Konzentration aufs Wesentliche, Minimierung bei der Aufnahmetechnik (ein Stereo-Mikro muss reichen) und die Suche nach dem inneren Zentrum.
